Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water, by taking the hydrogen atoms from water and combining them with molecules of carbon dioxide into a new type of compound - called carbohydrate. Chemists say that the carbon dioxide has been 'reduced' in this reaction, meaning that it has accepted atoms of hydrogen to become a different molecule. Hydrogen is said to be a 'reducing agent' in this reaction.
